Dave Pegg on Fairport Convention, Nick Drake, John Martyn and Sandy Denny

Dave Pegg, one of the most regular serving bass players at Sound Techniques studio in Chelsea, invited The Parts You Don’t Hear to his UK home near Cropredy, which is also a yearly festival he continues to play with Fairport Convention.

Although ‘Peggy’ was not in Fairport Convention until he replaced Ashley Hutchings in 1969, he has been their longest standing member starting with the celebrated fifth album Full House (1970) and continuing today. In fact, we caught him on a rare day at home after a busy 45 show tour with the band.

Switching from guitar to bass guitar when losing out on an audition to friend Roger Hill for The Uglys in 1966, the switch to fill in their other needed post proved life-changing and led to being an in-demand session bass player. A go-to regular for producer Joe Boyd and engineer John Wood at Sound Techniques, Chelsea led to a personal career highlight in Nick Drake‘s second album Bryter Later (1970) and other classics such as John Martyn‘s Solid Air (1973), Sandy Denny‘s Like An Old Fashioned Waltz (1973) and Richard & Linda Thompson‘s Pour Down Like Silver (1975). Classic British ‘folk’ doesn’t get much better than these, in our humble opinion.

Many thanks to Dave for his generous hospitality and hilarious storytelling. Please check out the Fairport Convention tour dates this year celebrating their 50th Anniversary and if you haven’t visited Cropredy Festival yet then it might be time that you did. Special thanks also to Stevie Horton at Iconic Music.
