John C. Wood: A filmic angle on Sound Techniques

With a career spanning nearly 50 years, beginning as a 15 year old at De Lane Lea, SohoJohn “Fingers” Wood has a resume the size of a Russian novel. Taking time out of a holiday in beautiful Barcelona, John came to chat with us about Sound Techniques impact on the dubbing industry in a time when advertising and television was exploding. Much more than that, the “other” John Wood gave us a unique chance to talk about not one but 3 separate studios fitted with consoles designed and built by Geoff Frost.

John was tasked in setting up De Lane Lea, Kingsway (also fitted with a Sound Techniques A Range) and would go onto work with LuluThe YardbirdsJeff BeckDonovanGeorgie Fame and Deep Purple; And with a mixing and dubbing filmography a mile long (including working for The Beatles‘ on Magical Mystery Tour) John might have clocked in more hours piloting a ST console than anyone on earth; In fact, in the mid sixties he was handling 60% of all of the UK’s television dubbing.

It was a pleasure to talk with you, John, and thanks again for taking time out to tell some spectacular stories for The Parts You Don’t Hear. Another untold story of Sound Techniques in the can!
