Original Fairport Convention singer Judy Dyble invited us into her Oxfordshire home to tell us about the origins of one of Sound Techniques most prolific and beloved bands. Judy’s memories of the inception of Fairport and their 1968 debut record helps set the scene for the kind of studio Sound Techniques would become.
The sound of their debut record is set apart from the bands later recordings; A psychedelia tinged selection of covers and originals. Emitt Rhodes, Joni Mitchell and Jim & Jean adaptations sit among songs by the great Richard Thompson, Ashley Hutchings and Dyble herself. The singer who plays autoharp, recorder and piano has worked with Giles, Giles and Fripp (the band who evolved into King Crimson) and she would later form Trader Horne with Jackie McAuley. Judy is still writing and recording with friends and numerous musicians including Robert Fripp.
A huge thanks to Judy for her time and for having us in her home. She has written an excellent autobiography called An Accidental Musician and released an acclaimed album with Andy Lewis titled Summer Dancing. You can read more about Judy on her official page.
